Founded
in 1987 by Dr. Sheldon Elman, Medisys Health Group was
created through the amalgamation of four Montreal-based
corporate health service providers. Soon thereafter,
Medisys expanded its service offerings to metropolitan
Toronto, as well as to insurance companies throughout
Quebec and Ontario. Operations in Calgary and Vancouver
were swift to follow with Medisys’ acquisition of Laurentian
Health Services Ltd. in 1991.
In 1998, Medisys positioned itself as one of Canada’s
largest service providers to life insurance companies,
acquiring the Insurance Medical Services division of
MDS. An international health and life sciences company,
MDS would provide Medisys with laboratory testing and
proteomics-enabled drug discovery.
April of the following year marked another milestone
in the company’s development as Medisys’ Corporate Headquarters
in Montreal received its ISO 9001 certification (H.O.),
an internationally recognized quality assurance standard.
To the best of the company’s knowledge, Medisys is the
sole ISO-9001 certified (H.O.) national provider of corporate
healthcare services.
In late 2002, the next stage in Medisys’ evolution
began as the company started trading on the Toronto Stock
Exchange. The revenue generated
by this IPO allowed the company to strengthen its medical
imaging capabilities with several key acquisitions, including
the installation of MRI and CT capabilities in Montreal.
In 2003, the acquisition of Toronto’s Edward Street
X-Ray Limited, a 30,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art
medical imaging facility, transformed Medisys into a
full-service medical imaging provider. Gammatech Nuclear
Imaging, an Ontario leader in nuclear medicine services,
and Guelph Imaging, the largest provider of ultrasound,
X-ray, mammography, nuclear medicine and bone mineral
densitometry joined Medisys in 2004. With the addition
of these first-rate facilities, Medisys enhanced its
capacity to offer a comprehensive range of medical imaging
services from a variety of locations. The acquisitions
of A.T.R. Laboratories, a leading provider of ultrasound
services, Toronto Radiologists’ Services, Niagara Diagnostic
Imaging and Imatech have further enhanced Medisys’ ability
to provide a comprehensive suite of sophisticated preventive
and diagnostic procedures.
In order to expand its presence in the independent
assessment market, Medisys acquired FAIR Medicals and
Merit Assessments in 2005. These additions have bolstered
Medisys’ roster of physicians, enhanced its geographic
service capacity and broadened its area of expertise.
In late 2005, Medisys entered
into a strategic alliance with Sun Life Financial’s Canadian
Group Benefits division. Together, the two companies
offer a distinct, integrated solution to customers who
require attendance support for their salary continuance
sick-leave plans. With this alliance, Medisys became
Sun Life Financial’s preferred provider of these
services.
Most recently, Medisys’ presence in the Executive Health
services market has been strengthened by the acquisition
of MDS’ Executive Health division and of Capstone Medical
Services Inc.
