Bone mineral densitometry (BMD) is a simple and painless procedure used to detect osteoporosis. It allows your physician to assess the strength (or density) of your bones, to estimate your risk of fracture and to determine your response to treatment.

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by the deterioration of bone tissue and the loss of bone mass. This leads to increased bone fragility and an elevated risk of fracture, particularly of the hip, spine and wrist. Osteoporosis is often known as “the silent thief” because bone loss occurs without any symptoms.

BMD uses a very low dose of radiation to identify and assess the strength of your bones. The procedure takes 20 to 30 minutes in its entirety and no special preparations are required.

Medisys is home to five BMD machines in the heart of Toronto and one in Guelph. We play an active role in the prevention of osteoporosis by performing well over 20,000 BMD procedures per year.
