For your parents
Protection against
shingles (Zostavax)
For: men and women over 60 years of age
who have had chicken pox in the past.
Singles is a painful and debilitating
condition that can last for 2 to 4 weeks
before resolving itself, but for more
than half of shingles sufferers over
the age of 60, shingles can progress
into a condition, which may cause nerve
pain that may last for months or even
years.
Medisys carries a new vaccine called
Zostavax which has been shown to reduce
the incidence of shingles in individuals
over 60 years of age by 51 per cent.
Additionally, for those who are vaccinated
and still develop shingles later on,
Zostavax reduces the incidence of severe
and long-lasting zoster-associated pain
by 73 per cent compared with those who
do not get vaccinated.
Zostavax is recommended for men and
women over 60 years of age who have had
chicken pox in the past.

For your children
Protection against HPV, Genital
Warts and Cervical Cancer (Gardasil)
For: young women aged between 11 and
26 and in young men between 9 and 26.
According to Health Canada, 75% of sexually
active Canadians will have at least one
human papillomavirus (HPV) infection
in their lifetime. Most people who contract
HPV never develop any symptoms or health
problems.
Gardasil is a Health Canada-approved
vaccine that helps prevent genital warts,
cervical cancer and anal cancer caused
by the most common forms of human papillomavirus
(HPV).
Gardasil is recommended in young women
aged between 11 and 26 and in young men
between 9 and 26.

Protection against Meningococcal Meningitis
(Menactra & Menveo)
The Canadian Paediatric Society recommends
that infants receive 2 or 3 meningococcal
shots before 12 months of age AND a booster
shot between 12 to 23 months of age (depending
on your provincial or territorial immunization
program). All adolescents should receive
a booster dose at about 12 years of age.
Usually caused by a virus or the presence
of bacteria, meningitis is an infection
of the fluid that surrounds the spinal
cord and the brain.
Meningitis spreads through close contact,
like a cold or flu. Coughing or sneezing,
sharing eating utensils, kissing and
close physical contact can spread the
germs from person to person. Because
it is almost impossible to stop the transmission
of germs, especially among children,
vaccination becomes an important consideration.
