Angelina Jolie Speaks on Elective Surgery and Reducing Cancer Risk

In a candid Op-Ed piece published in the New York Times on March 24, 2015, Angelina Jolie describes her decision to have surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes in order to prevent cancer. Ms. Jolie is a carrier of a rare genetic alteration in a gene called BRCA1, which greatly increases a woman’s risk for breast and ovarian cancer. In her article, she cautions that her decision might not be right for everyone. A genetic counsellor can help women who are at increased risk for ovarian cancer understand genetic testing and the full range of options available for cancer prevention.
