BONE MINERAL DENSITOMETRY:
HELPING PREVENT AND TREAT OSTEOPOROSIS
Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) is a simple, non-invasive and painless procedure that uses very small amounts of x-ray to detect weakened bone density, or osteoporosis. BMD scanning is important because osteoporosis affects 1 in 4 women after menopause and 1 in 8 men, and bone loss occurs without symptoms.
what to expect
During the BMD scan, you will be asked to lie on your back on a specialized BMD measuring table. Two areas of the body are generally measured: the lower back and the hip. A technologist will ensure that you are positioned correctly and comfortably as the machine gradually performs the scan. The whole procedure takes 15 to 30 minutes.
how to prepare
No special preparations are required for a Bone Mineral Densitometry scan. You should wear comfortable clothes with no zippers, snaps, buttons or any metal around the abdomen or pelvic areas, and you may be asked to change into a gown.
You’ll need to tell the doctor or technologist if you may be pregnant.
If you have any concerns or questions, our specialists will be happy to answer them. .
