Dr. Gordon has always taken a preventive approach to health with his patients, and joined the Medisys team in 2008. With his extensive experience in emergency medicine, Dr. Gordon is knowledgeable and well recognized in the community as a leader in primary care.

Why did you decide to become a doctor? Do you want the honest answer or the one you can put into your article? The truth is that a friend and I were at a pub one night and decided to apply to medical school because we thought it would be a good way to get girls. Initial motivations aside, it’s been a fabulous career choice for me; I’m so grateful that I’m granted the opportunity to consult with patients every day about making positive changes in their lives to improve their health.  Even though, like many young people in my day, I chose medical school somewhat at random, it turned out to be one of the best choices I’ve ever made.

What’s your secret to raising healthy, well-adjusted kids? Try not to kill them because one day they may give you a grandchild. In all seriousness, when it comes raising kids, remember that everything is a phase, things change, stay the course.

What keeps you inspired? My wife and my kids… And looking out my window at the mountains.

Why Medisys?  I’ve worked in emergency medicine and family practice for 30 years. In the public system, sometimes it’s hard to practice preventive health with the pressures of time slots.  My work at Medisys is very rewarding – it enables me to spend quality time with my patients and work collaboratively with a team of experts to make a positive impact on people’s lives.  At Medisys, our clients tend to assume more accountability for their health. It’s refreshing to have so many clients that take ownership over the information we give them – no excuses as to why they can’t make a change for the better. Our clients know that their health is in their hands and it’s up to them to make a change.  Providing care at Medisys is easy because all our medical professionals are here, onsite in the clinic, whereas in the public system, a patient would have to scatter throughout the community to see the same team of healthcare professionals. At Medisys you know your patients are being seen by experts because those appointments happen right down the hall. In the public system you may send a patient with risk of developing diabetes to see a dietitian, or someone with a high waist to hip ratio to a kinesiologist to build an exercise program, but you never know if the appointment actually happens or if you’ll ever see that patient again.

What do you do to unwind? Anything active, I ski, cycle, play tennis, walk, run. My wife will tell you I just can’t sit still. Life just feels better when you are active. It’s the single most important thing a person can do for their health in my opinion: just be active. Well, that and don’t smoke. It all boils down to being active and not smoking. Everything else pales in comparison.

What was your first job? I sold popcorn at the local baseball stadium. I often ate more than I sold.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Don’t sweat the small stuff. I try to take that attitude toward living.
